Echo of the Past represents a punctuation point in ongoing research about translating the memory of ‘place’ related to traditional domestic architecture from South-Western Saudi Arabia into contemporary installations. These are not intended to copy the architectural styles, but find a parallel language to express my feelings which developed through living as a child in one of these houses. My embodied and subjective response to both this lived experience and to my sadness about the recent dramatic loss of these buildings, communities, and their collective tacit knowledge is manifested through suggesting gestures, by leaving traces, and through the manipulation of natural and indigenous materials.
